Even though beer has been around for thousands of years, people still seem to tell tales about this deliciously popular beverage. We like to give people the benefit of the doubt and hope that either they don’t mean to do it or they’re just listening to others and making assumptions based on pure opinion.
Every so often these myths can be heard echoing through bars, taprooms, restaurants and even at events all around the country. We are here to debunk some common beer myths and give beer lovers, new and old, the downright truth. Ready?? Let’s jump right in.
Beer Should Be Served Ice Cold
Of course, beer is best served on a nice warm day, especially if you are local to a warm client like we are here in the Fort Lauderdale area, but the truth is, serving your brews ice cold may not be a winner in the taproom or a local brewery! Ice cold temperatures actually numb your taste buds and can hide some of the aromas in your beer! The purpose of drinking a good glass of beer is to enjoy the flavors and really get the experience out of what you are drinking. Anyone can chug a Bud Light, but if you are drinking for pleasure and enjoyment, you want the flavors to hit your palette all over the place. So, the next time you head out to one of your favorite craft breweries, be sure to think about this. Are you able to decipher the flavors of the beer? If so, you’ve found just the right spot for a delicious brew!
Dark Beers Are Stronger
Wrong + Wrong. Here are the facts! People tend to assume that the darker the beer the higher alcohol content it will have. This is not true, in many cases. In fact, the color of your beer has absolutely no correlation to its strength or alcohol content, it just has to do with the roast of malts that was used. Darker beers typically have a richer flavor due to the ingredients that are used, like chocolate, coffee, coconut milk, nuts or even caramel. This can correlate to an increased calorie and carbohydrate content but not necessarily a higher ABV.
Beer in the Bottle Is Better Than Canned Beer
WHAT?!? Let’s set the record straight! If we are talking pure science, the truth is that aluminum cans keep out light better than a bottle and also keeps out air with much better quality than a twist-off cap. With that being said, we can vouch that many (most) craft breweries agree, as more and more of them opt for canning instead of bottling. Most Broward County Breweries that you visit, will have the option for you to take beers on draft, to-go, in cans! With the ability to can right in the tap room, you can take these beverages home to enjoy even after you leave the brewery. Have you heard the term “skunky flavor”? Beer cans drastically limit exposure to both light and oxygen, keeping the beer inside fresh and flavorful for longer. When beer is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light for extended periods, it leads to oxidization and an unpleasant “skunky” flavor in the beer. Trust us when we say we pick the can over the bottle, any day of the week.
Beer Is Bad For Your Health
Sometimes there’s nothing better than cracking open a cold one after a long day. Right?
The facts are the facts. Anything overdone, is not good for your health, whether it’s beer, vodka, or good old fashioned cheeseburger and fries.
While excessive beer drinking can lead to weight gain, beer is no more responsible for the size of your gut than the calories you take in from food. A lot of it comes down to metabolism and living a healthy lifestyle. If you were to eat pizza and fries every day, the likelihood of weight gain is probable, same goes for beer.
According to a few studies that we read, “beer contains more protein and B vitamins than wine. The antioxidant content of beer is equivalent to that of wine, but the specific antioxidants are different because the barley and hops used in the production of beer contain flavonoids different from those in the grapes used in the production of wine.” Another study published in the Journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes found that people who drink 3 to 4 times per week were less likely to develop diabetes than those who never drink.
